Economic Wing

The Economic wing of the Bangladesh Mission in Brussels serves as the conduit between the Economic Relations Division (ERD) of the government of Bangladesh and the development agencies of the European institutions based in Brussels. Particularly, it works in close association with  EC’s Directorate General for External Relations (RELEX), Directorate General for Development, EuropeAid Co-operation Office (AidCo), European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO), D-G Economic and Financial Affairs, D-G Environment, European Investment Bank (EIB), European Investment Fund, Development Committee of the European Parliament, and Economic and Social Committee of the European Union, Close contact is maintained with the key officials of these agencies with the end of securing a maximum quantum of external resources for Bangladesh. To be precise the goal is secure an aid quantum which is 0.70 of their GNI, as suggested by the United Nations.

The Economic wing actively participated in the process of formulation of EU’s financial perspective for 2007-2013, with respect to Bangladesh. The concerned document styled National Indicative Programme 2007-2013  (NIP) outlines future pattern of EU resource flow into Bangladesh which is in the range of Euro 398 million for the concerned period. Shares of three focal areas are : Human and Social Development - 35%, Good Governance and Human Rights - 25% and Economic and Trade Development - 20%.The operational aspect (first phase) of the NIP is documented in Country Strategy Paper 2007-10 (CSP).

Among others, the Economic wing is involved in organizing EC-Bangladesh Joint Commission meetings, mobilization of humanitarian aid, mobilization of assistance for the aviation sector of the country (Bangladesh being a partner of the European Commission’s Regional South Asia Civil Aviation Project), project finance by European Investment Bank, securing of educational fellowships and promotion of investment in Bangladesh.

On the bi-lateral side, the Economic wing is playing an active role in boosting economic relations with Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
